‘Fort Nepean’ encompasses the final 350 m of land mass situate at the very western end of the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. As the name implies, this precinct was once a fort designed to defend Port Phillip Bay from invasion from by sea . . . It comprises of a network of tunnels, fortifications, parade ground, gun placements, gunnery bunkers, ammunition magazines, engine house, even the remains of a seaside lavatory . . .
The views are literally outstanding. Looking westward across The Rip and Corsair Rock, to the ‘Point Lonsdale Lighthouse’ and beyond to Cape Otway in the far, far distance. To the north is the Bellarine Peninsula – including Queenscliff and beyond . . . To the north-east and east are Port Phillip Bay and the Mornington Peninsula.
One can get a real sense of how narrow The Rip’ really is – at only 3 km across – the way the water rushes, ripples and gurgles shouting danger ubiquitously – and this is on a calm day !!! As the massive ships approach they dwarf all that surrounds them, yet even they visibly slow as they pursue this narrow, treacherous pass. One cannot even comprehend how sailing ships successfully navigated the ‘Rip’ – now power back up – now maps showing the obstacles below . . .
