Wangaratta Area – Assault on Aborigines

The year of 1838 saw many Aboriginal killings by Commandant HEP Dana and the Native Police Corps in the area west of Wangaratta, which is situate in the north-central region of Victoria.

Following the ‘Faithfull Massacre’ incident, the government was quick to open the lands southward, encouraging settlers to the region.  Sadly, the ‘Faithfull Massacre’ gave credence to further murders of the Aboriginal people.  Massacres were recorded on the Ovens River at Wangaratta, Murchison, Mitchellstown and Toolamba.  The numbers killed and methods used, were cited by some who participated in the massacres, as greatly misrepresented in the ‘Official Reports’ . . .
