Swimming at any one of Portarlington’s magnificent beaches capitalises on their magnificent north facing aspect. There are numerous sheltered coves accessible directly from The Esplanade, and along which, a walking / cycling trail follows the entire shoreline to St Leonards.
Located some 1.5 km the main shopping precinct, along The Esplanade, this particular cove provides a number of facilities such as a jetty, boat ramp and public toilets. Some picnic tables can be found perched high on the point – overlooking the shoreline and Port Phillip Bay.
This cove is very shallow, just perfect for young children, and offers the opportunity to wander in the shallows – viewing the Aboriginal birthing cave and many middens which are still present today – high on the cliff top . . .
Wandering to the west, into the next cove, reveals the remains of the historical sea baths, and as the shoreline rises again, the beautiful red Ochre cliff face.
The relatively safe waters of Port Phillip Bay make for perfect conditions for swimming and all manner of water sporting pursuits.
