The Nicholson River begins in the Angora Range in the lower reaches of the Australian Alps west of Ensay. Flowing south-east, through the small township of Nicholson, it is one of the three best boating rivers entering the Gippsland Lakes – the other two being the Mitchell and Tambo Rivers.
Long stretches of sheltered waters surrounded by varied and stunning scenery, the Nicholson River offers relatively safe boating upstream to Nicholson, depending on your vessel. Smaller vessels can, of course, venture even further upstream.
From the mouth of the river there are some 400 square kilometres of the Gippsland Lakes system to be explored. Direct access to Bass Strait is via The Entrance located in the vicinity of the township of Lakes Entrance.
An absolute mecca for boating enthusiasts of all disciplines: motor, sailing, jet skiing, wind surfing, kayaking and so forth . . .
The boat ramp at Nicholson provides great access, ample parking, amenities, a general store and a hotel.
