This particular trail, known as the ‘Links Corridor’, follows a section of the disused railway that once transported goods and passengers all the way out to sea on the impressive ‘Urangan Pier‘. As one rides along the trail, one can almost sense the steam engines and indeed, imagine them steaming along – with a whistle or two announcing their arrival and departure . . .
Trails that follow the abandoned railway corridors of yesteryear are generally of an easy gradient and fairly straight as the early trains had to carve their way through the countryside via the easiest possible route. It requires five times more energy to pull a train up a gradient of 1 in 100 than for a level course – trying to stop a heavy train on a steep descent proved a challenge too great . . . Energy consumption increases approx 25 % for each degree of curve.
Hence the railway corridors were constructed as level, and as straight, as was possible – cutting through hills, under roads, over embankments and across gullies, rivers and creeks, making them perfect for walking and bike riding !!!
The formal trail does not quite extend all the way to the pier, however, a short diversion via some roadways will connect to the delightful park areas that surround the ‘Urangan Pier’ precinct and the entire foreshore of Hervey Bay.
Another wonderful walking / cycling trail traverses the entire shoreline of Hervey Bay – from Gatakers Bay, all the way to the Urangan Boat Harbour – some 14 km in total . . .
The ‘Links Corridor’ is an easy gradient the entire way, consisting of well maintained paved surfaces. The trail, for the most part, is separated from the road.
