Located on the northern flank of the South Gippsland Highway, some 3 km west of the township of Toora, the Franklin River Rest Area is equipped with shelters, picnic tables, BBQ’s, seating and public toilets – perfect for a rejuvenating break and overnight stays for the weary traveller as well as family gatherings, picnics, lazy Sunday afternoons with friends for the locals . . .
This delightful 3 acre parkland features mature trees with expansive lawn areas. Walking amongst the trees to the trickling waters of the Franklin River invigorates the soul.
An absolutely delightful and spacious free camp area for those travelling with fully self-contained caravans, motor-homes, RV’s . . .
The site was originally reserved for the purpose of ‘Camping and Watering’ in the April of 1887, by the Commission of Crown Lands and Survey, John L Dow. The Summers saw the swimming holes of the Franklin River as a popular draw card for the children of nearby Toora, who would ride their bikes to the river after school and on weekends.
The reserve and the banks of the Franklin River were cleared and replanted some 50 years ago, by the tireless efforts of the sole gardens curator of the entire South Gippsland Shire, Ernest Charles Foster, who foresaw the beauty and potential of the reserve. The latter years of the 20th century saw Charles Ashby Barnett volunteer his time to again clear the river banks, re-establish the swimming holes, build barbeques and so forth.
Over the years, volunteers have contributed immensely to the beauty of the river banks, the swimming holes, the reserve, and, to the building and maintenance of the structures.
