Wandering along Merrick Street, in Stratford, Victoria, delights in breathtaking and expansive views down upon the Avon River → across the river flats → and to the mountains in the distance.
It would appear from the ‘Plan of Stratford’ (c 1855), and, from the remaining historic structures that line Merrick Street, that perhaps Merrick Street was originally, the main road of the township. Oh, the magnificent views those first settlers would have enjoyed !!! Fortunately, the views can still be enjoyed today.
Towards the end of Merrick Street, where the ‘Shakespeare Hotel’ (c 1840’s) previously resided, the remains of an old bridge that once crossed Blackall Creek can be spotted amongst the brush, in the very vicinity where Gippsland’s oldest road once ran . . .
