St. Patrick’s Catholic Church is located on the corner of McMillan and Merrick Streets in Stratford, Victoria. The beautiful, historic Church sits high upon a hill, overlooking the stunning river flats of the Avon River, across to the mountains in the distance. It is situate adjacent to the monument erected in honour of Angus McMillan and his men, who crossed the Avon River in early 1840.
The original plan of Stratford dated the 15th May 1855, indicates that the town was originally sited from the junction of the Avon River northward, along Blackall Creek – which Merrick Street runs in line with. The plan clearly identifies the location of the ‘Roman Catholic Church’, hence the assumption the the build date must be prior to 1855.
