Wandering along Merrick Street, in Stratford, Victoria, one can’t help but notice this building that exhibits the unique architecture of the mid 1800’s.
Look a little closer; and one can still clearly identify the signage “Avon Shire Council“.
The article to the left clearly confirms the existence of Council Chambers within the township of Stratford in 1866, noting that the Shire of Avon was constituted a year earlier, in 1865 – Stratford being the seat of government.
The location of this historic building is consistent with the belief that Merrick Street was once the main road of the township. The ‘Plan of Stratford‘ dated 1855 indicates quite a number of commercial establishments once lined this road . . .
The council chambers were moved into the Stratford Courthouse upon its completion in 1885. Though, on the 1 June 1885, the Courthouse was leased to “Queen Victoria, her successors and assigns” for 999 years, the court chambers and council offices were closed just 91 years later, in 1976 . . .
The council offices were then moved to the township of Sale.
