Leaving the car ahead of the entrance entitled ‘Collins Settlement 1803 – the First Official European Settlement in Victoria‘, a short stroll of only 225 m along a mostly bitumen pathway will reveal another lookout which takes in the beauty of both ‘Sullivan Bay’ and ‘Cameron’s Bight’. Further information signage reveals the geological evolution of the area, the sunklands between the Fault Lines, of which Port Phillip Bay is part of – the changing water levels which at times flooded parts of the Mornington Peninsula and at other times left just a small lake which stretched from Indented Head to Frankston . . .
The lookout is directly opposite an expanse of vacant land where one can momentarily forget how development is encroaching and overtaking this historically significant site – where the first ever official European settlement of Victoria’s shores occurred in 1803 – though short lived.
For history buffs, this short trail is full of fascinating historical information.
The views from this vantage point are expansive and beautiful – well worth the visit !!!
