The first school in Portarlington opened on 20th October 1873 in the ‘Wesleyan Church‘ – with 73 pupils under Mr. Thomas Brown.
Following a disparity with the church authorities in 1876, the school moved to the Temperance Hall.
A new building was approved in 1878, with the site set north of Newcombe Street, being a portion of ‘Section 26, Township of Portarlington’, in the County of Grant.
The building was completed on the 1st May 1881 by Mr. D. Spence at a cost of £770.
The school was officially opened by Dr. A McLeod, President of the Bellarine Shire and was first occupied on the 1st May 1882.
The school still operates from the original site and in the original buildings of the 1880’s.
School enrolments have fluctuated over the years. By 1921, numbers had increased so much that the school was raised to the status of a ‘Higher Elementary School’, however, by 1932 it lost the secondary division as attendances fell during the Depression years . . .
