Located on the southern flank of the Princes Highway some 18.5 km east of the township of Stratford and 33 km west of Bairnsdale, the ‘Providence Ponds’ Rest Area is sizable, with ample room to cater for larger rigs.
The Rest Area is equipped with picnic tables and public toilets. It abuts the Providence Ponds Flora & Fauna Reserve which is well worth a visit.
The area ‘Providence Ponds’ has been identified in maps of the area from as early as 1844.
Today, the ‘Providence Ponds Flora & Fauna Reserve’ spans the Princes Highway and is an important conservation area for plant species including some nationally endangered plant species such as the Dwarf Kerrawang (Rulingia prostrata) and the Prostrate Cone Bush (Isopogon prostrata).
A population of a small native rodent that was thought to be extinct, the New Holland Mouse (Pseudomys novaehollandiae), was also found in the reserve in the early 1990s.
