A short diversion ascending a service road from Rivermouth Road, will reveal the most stunning views across fields, mountain ranges, the infamous silt jetties, rivers and lakes. Perched high above the Mitchell River is the elevated vantage point known as ‘The Bluff” at Eagle Point in Victoria. The Mitchell River feeds into the Gippsland Lakes forming the longest silt jetties in the world !!!
.
It is interesting to note how dramatically the landscape has changed in the past 150 years or so, since the arrival of the Europeans . . .
Intense clearing and agriculture has resulted in the massive erosion of the land surrounding the waterways, which is clearly evident at ‘The Bluff’. The once vegetated, sloping landscape is now a sheer, vertical cliff . . .
Today, though ‘The Bluff’ is only some 18 m above sea level, the panorama from the top is spectacular – a sight not to be missed !!!
The road is accessible to all vehicles, including caravans and motorhomes – with a circular road end, for easy access / egress.
