As the name would suggest, the ‘Northern Lookout’ embraces the colossal views available from the northern face of ‘Arthurs Seat’. Encompassing the eastern coastline of the Mornington Peninsula, Melbourne (dead ahead, some 60 km across Port Phillip Bay), Mt Dandenong to the north-east and Mt Macedon to the north-west – closer at hand, the trail to the Matthew Flinders Cairn can be seen on the next escarpment across to the east. Atop of all this, the signage at the lookout marks out the landmarks before you, which is very helpful when trying to get your bearings . . .
The views are breathtaking and the gardens that surround the lookout are beautifully landscaped. A stone stairway up through the gardens reveals another layer of views and gardens, with a seat to rest and take some time to absorb all that is before, and, surrounds you.
The retaining wall leading to the lookout is adorned with sculptures that add yet another element of interest to this precinct.
