Located on one of the reasonably tight curves of Arthurs Seat Road, the trees suddenly open to reveal an enormous view over northern and western Port Phillip Bay. Embarking on the trip to the summit of Arthurs Seat from Dromana, the road climbs rather steeply, at an estimated 10% gradient – some sections are of course steeper than others, and include some very tight “hair-pin” bends. ‘Murrays Lookout’ is located on one of the bends of the road, some 850 m before reaching the summit.
A transcript of the plaque reads:
” . . . MURRAYS LOOK-OUT
to commemorate
Lieut JOHN MURRAY
who named this Mountain
ARTHURS SEAT
on 15th February 1802
Presented by L. Carrigg Esq.
14/12/1929 . . . “
Some parking is available at which you can stop and take in the beautiful panorama that lies before you. A monument stands proudly overlooking the stunning view commemorating the naming of Arthurs Seat by Lieutenant John Murray on the 15th February 1802:
” . . . Monday, February 15th. P.M. Working up, the port with a very strong ebb against us, we however gained ground. The southern shore of this noble harbour is bold high land in general and not clothed as all the land at Western Point is with thick brush but with stout trees of various kinds and in some places falls nothing short, in beauty and appearance, of Greenwich Park. Away to the eastward at the distance of 20 miles the land is mountainous, in particular there is one very high mountain which in the meantime I named Arthur’s Seat from its resemblance to a mountain of that name a few miles from Edinburgh. . . “
