The ‘Urangan Boat Harbour’ located in Hervey Bay, Queensland, presents an enormous hub for boat lovers, tourists, travellers, and the like – providing everything from shopping and eateries, to marina berths and boat ramps.
Passenger terminals for the many sea faring tours and ferries also reside here . . .
The harbour houses three marinas – nestled behind the sea walls . . .
Northern Marina
Strolling along the boardwalk that overlooks the northern most marina, admire the crocodile sculpture relaxing on a pontoon whilst enjoying the a large variety of shopping, cafes, restaurants, information, tours and accommodation. A large car park located across Buccaneer Drive services the wharf area, providing ample parking and a picnic area with play equipment for the children.
Tours to the World Heritage listed Fraser Island – the largest sand island in the World – depart from the northern most marina. The 120 km sand highway on the island is ever popular, as well as the many varieties of accommodation available in this natural wonderland. Though the island is composed of sand alone, it features towering rain forests that seem to defy all rules of nature, as well as over 100 freshwater lakes. It is a stunning ecology – an absolute MUST to see.
Humpback Whales are also a major draw card of the region. Tours to view these magnificent giants also depart from this section of the harbour. Each year, during winter, humpback whales migrate from the Antarctic, via the South Island of New Zealand, to the warm waters of the tropics – to have their babies. They start to arrive in Hervey Bay from late July and generally remain until November, when their return to the southern ocean begins. To witness their acrobatic manoeuvres – these giants of almost incomprehensible size hurdling out of the water – one can almost hear their laughter whilst they are at play – and then, ever so gently, they approach – inquisitive, curious, knowing – a truly is a life changing experience . . .
The Hervey Bay Boat Club Marina
The middle marina has been built by the ‘Hervey Bay Boat Club’. The facilities are for the use of its members.
Southern Marina
The southern marina houses both commercial and private berths, as well as a number wharves situate on the outer sea wall, which are owned by local trawler operators. This area features a large car park which services the boat ramps and the ferry service.
Plans to redevelop and enlarge this harbour precinct could well see the ‘Urangan Boat Harbour’ become the destination in the very near future . . .
