Situate amidst the Mangrove forests that line Tooan Tooan Creek in Pialba, Queensland, are a number of Flying Fox ‘Camp Sites’, mainly housing the Grey-Headed Flying Fox – it is believed that this area has always been their home. Interestingly, they will often migrate to the Botanic Gardens during winter, to roost in the melaleuca forest. Large flocks of the Little Red Flying Foxes have been known to rain down on these camps following severe cyclones further north – often venturing to Fraser Island to feed . . .
Apex Park, which is located amidst the camp sites, provides a wealth of information about these fascinating mammals, with signage dispersed around the park. The colonies of Flying Foxes span both sides of Charlton Esplanade, their chatter quite audible whilst traversing the fantastic Pialba Leg of the Hervey Bay Esplanade Trail.
It truly is a great opportunity to learn about these cute little creatures – the only mammals that can sustain flight – their importance to Australia’s forests and landscapes – and, their plight since Europeans have chopped down so much of their habitat . . .
