For those who choose to enjoy a break at the ‘Zonhoven Park’ Rest Area, located on the eastern perimeter of the township of Gayndah, in Queensland, a short wander around the area will reveal a delightful monument affording just a tiny snippet into the lives of the traditional inhabitants of the land, before European occupation.
It reads:
“Wangaun (Welcome)
This was one of the Campsites of the
Wakka Wakka People. Here the Elders
taught their Tribal Ways of the Land
and their Culture while the Young
Men and Women hunted and fished
for Food.”
Aborigines have been resident in Australia for tens of thousands of years. Since the arrival of the Europeans in the region c 1848 – sadly, relatively few remain in the area today . . .
