‘St Josephs School‘ is situate right in between ‘St Joseph’s Catholic Church‘ to the West, and, the old Convent to the East.
As the town of Gayndah in Queensland grew, the local parishioners rallied together to build a school and a convent.
The convent was originally designed to accommodate a school, and housing for the Sisters and for boarding students. The school, named ‘St. Joseph’s School’, was officially opened on the 6th October 1919 – some 3 months before the intended date of January 1920.
The school commenced classes with 56 students on the roll. By the end of 1919, the school enrolments had already increased to 76 !!! – and, the numbers continued to increase . . .
The need for a separate school building was becoming more and more apparent.
Within 10 years of opening, ‘St Josephs School’ had acquired its own school building – officially opened by Archbishop Duhig, on Sunday, 14th April 1929.
Today, the school building remains essentially the same, however, the surrounding gardens and play equipment for the children looks much improved..
