The first Roman Catholic Church in Gayndah, Queensland was established c 1860’s to 1870’s and was served by itinerant priests until the arrival of Father Constantine Rossolini, who was appointed as the first Parish Priest of Gayndah c 1871. At this time, the region was referred to as the Gayndah – Mt Perry Parish.
The original Church building, having been greatly damaged by natural disasters, was replaced by the stunning structure that we see today. “Blessed and Opened . . . ” on the 18th April 1915 by the Archbishop of Brisbane, Reverend James Duhig, this building has stood the test of time.
It was the parishioners who rallied and raised the funds for the new Church. Father Patrick Brady, who had arrived c 1912 worked with his parishioners to make it all happen. By the May of 1914 he called for funds to build the new structure. Funds were raised via donations as well as a Grand Bazaar that was held in the September of that same year. In total, some £625 were raised. Built of rendered block-work with stucco finished buttresses, the materials of sand and stone apparently sourced straight from the Burnett River bed itself, the fine building was completed and heralded with a grand opening that attracted some 800 people, including priests from Maryborough, Mount Perry, Goodna, Nanango and Helidon.
Today, the beautiful structure of ‘St Joseph’s Catholic Church’ catches one’s eye as one strolls along Meson Street. The lovingly maintained exterior is finished in a smooth-cream colour, whilst the trims are highlighted in a ‘rust-red’ colour. The buttresses are elegantly decorated with triangular cappings mid way up, capping the thicker portions of the buttresses. The elegant, arched, leadlight windows complete the picture.
The main entrance is welcoming with its separate enclosed porch area, sheltered by a gabled roof.
The gardens are beautifully maintained featuring mature trees which bestow welcome shade from the Summer Sun. The lawn areas are complimented with paved pathways, one of which leads to the Church Bell . . .
