As Gayndah, in Queensland’s Burnett region, grew so very rapidly, so did the need for law and order.
From the 3rd June 1848, when the Archers first crossed the Burnett River at the location that Gayndah now inhabits, the crossing place became known as ‘Norton’s Camp’. Within that following year, after the historic crossing of the river, ‘Norton’s Camp’ became a town. The name of the town: Gayndah – an interpretation of the Aboriginal word for thunder.
By the January of 1850, Gayndah was appointed ” . . . a place for holding Courts of Petty Sessions . . . “ as was published in the ‘Maitland Mercury’ on the 9th January 1850. This appointment is a key indicator of how significant the town had become as a central business hub for the area, at the time.
Though records are scant, one can only presume that a Court House of some description was available or built prior to this date, in which to hold these petty sessions.
Originally located adjacent to the Police Station and the original Hospital, which were located on Capper Street – just to the east of the Town Centre, the Court House served the community until the January of 1929, when the beautiful building that we see today was opened. Situate in the heart of town, set back from the road, and sporting a number of stunning specimens of the ‘Queensland Bottle Tree‘, the Court House immediately draws the eye . . .
The beautiful timber building has a T-shaped configuration. The front facade displays a long verandah running between the two gable protrusions at each end. The offices are located along the front, and the court room to the rear. The large central ventilator is a real feature . . .
