Walking the streets of Gayndah in Queensland, a giant windmill, ‘smack-bang’ in the middle of town is observed – how unusual ? – it definately warrants further investigation . . .
As it draws closer, its size is startling – and such an Australian icon. Below, a memorial stands, an extract of which reads:
.
” The Albert Colch Memorial Windmill
This windmill is dedicated to the memory of Albert Colch (02/06/1926 to 28/02/2003).
Mr Colch was a dedicated community worker, long serving member of the Gayndah Lions Club (25 years of service in which he held the position of president, secretary and zone chairman) and was awarded the Gayndah Australia Day Citizens Award in 1997 in recognition of his community service. Albert was responsible for the concept and erection of the windmill as a working tourist attraction and feature of Lions Park. The windmill was erected during his wife’s (Mrs June Colch) term as Gayndah Lions Club President (2001 – 2002)
“Let’s do it one more time. Let’s make sure that we do it properly”.
This memorial was dedicated on June 8, 2003 . . . “
The Windmill is located within ‘Lions Park‘.
Facilities in the park include: Public Toilets, sheltered Picnic Tables, Barbecues, Playground, Exercise Park, Skate Park, monuments, drinking fountain, and information.
