A large car park is located off Queen Street, some 95 m south of the Crown Street intersection. It is conveniently located to service the marina and foreshore precincts – easily catering for larger rigs.
Facilities provided are the marina, public toilets, picnic tables (some located along the water’s edge, others capitalising on the shade of the trees further back), and rubbish bins. A short stroll along the river banks bestows more amenities such as a boat ramp, jetty, more seating and picnic tables. The ‘Clarence Walk’ also commences at this point, travelling upstream, along the river banks some for 1.2 km. The views are outstanding.
The township of Iluka, is steeped in history surrounding the ‘training’ of the Clarence River and the treasures that made the ‘Clarence District’ so appealing to the early settlers. Works on the walls commenced as early as 1862 – when the water highways were the only form of transport . . .
It is fascinating to view the enormity of the project undertaken so long ago – with minimal tools. Today, the breakwaters and walls that form Iluka Bay and the marina within, are a major feature of the Clarence River estuary, providing moorings for all those who indulge in boating pursuits – both large and small – commercial or for pleasure . . .
