Campaspe Plains – Assault on Aborigines

Victoria Timeline Map CampaspeDuring the months of May to June of 1839, at least forty Daung Aborigines were reported to have been killed by settlers led by station owner, Charles Hutton, at their campsite, near the ‘Campaspe Creek’, located in the north-central region of Victoria. 

It was said that the Daung Wurrung Aborigines had previously killed two shepherds which was in retaliation for the murder three Daung prior by these shepherds . . .  This then lead to the justification for the massacre . . .

The following month Charles Hutton led a party of armed police to murder another six Dja Dja Wurrung Aborigines at their camp.  It is horrific to realise that all six Aborigines were shot in the back whilst fleeing . . .
