If you are looking for somewhere to camp with the water lapping at your wheels, then Marlay Point in Clydebank, Victoria is the place for you. Located just over 20 km from the township of Sale, Marlay Point is a quiet spot, sited on the banks of Lake Wellington.
With expansive lawn areas that stretch out to the sandy beach, or, if shade is a premium, then a few metres up the beach are areas shaded by large trees.
For those who enjoy a spot of history, ‘Marlay Point’ derives its name from the first run that was established here by squatter, Captain Lachlan MacAlister, in the year 1843 – the man responsible for sending exploration teams to this region in 1839 to 1840. Angus McMillan, the leader of these expeditions, successfully found the fertile and well watered lands MacAlister had hoped for – which promptly lead to the European settlement of Gippsland.
The birdlife at Marlay Point is breathtaking – they do not seem at all perturbed by humans. Over breakfast, watch the pelicans feast – or be watched by the many curious water and land birds . . .
Lake Wellington forms part of Gippsland’s enormous lake and river system – literally some 400 sq km of waterways to explore !! The lakes and rivers are perfect for all manner of aquatic sports.
